Do Dogs Think About Food? What Does Science Say?
Often you would have noticed your pet member sitting by her bowl when it is mealtime. It is also a common sight to see them excited when you open a specific cupboard or when you mention a food that she loves. But, do dogs think about food? What does science say about this? Let's see now.
1. Dogs’ Brains Are Wired for Food Rewards
A fascinating study conducted at Emory University used fMRI brain scans to study dogs that are awake. Researchers discovered that a specific part of the brain - the caudate nucleus, associated with pleasure and reward-lights up when dogs smell food or their favorite person.
This proves dogs anticipate food rewards and may actively think about food when triggered by smells or certain cues.
2. Dogs Remember Mealtimes and Anticipate Food
Have you noticed your dog gently trying to remind you it's mealtime if you do not feed them on time? Depending on the trait of individual pet, a dog may get excited during mealtime or quietly sit by the food bowl if you don't feed her on time. They may also try to remind you by coming closer to you to leave a peck or two on you.
Dogs are masters at routine and time-based anticipation. Scientists have found that dogs possess episodic-like memory, allowing them to recall specific events, such as when and where they usually get fed.
This type of memory means your dog isn’t just reacting—it’s likely they are thinking ahead about food.

3. Dogs Understand Food Words and Human Cues
In another study, researchers found that dogs process human speech using the left hemisphere of their brains—the same side we use to process language. Words like “treat,” “dinner,” or “snack” or the mention of their favorite foods can trigger neural responses, especially when said in a happy tone.
So when you say “Want a treat?” your dog isn’t just reacting to your tone—they likely know it’s about food and are thinking about it before they move.
4) Dogs May Dream About Food Too!
It’s not just while awake, say experts - dogs might think about food even when they are asleep! According to Dr. Stanley Coren, a renowned canine expert, dogs likely dream about daily activities, including eating, playing, and even hunting for food.
Those little twitches or paw movements during sleep could mean your pup is chasing a dream meal in their mind. Sounds sweet, right?
This, sort of makes us even more careful in planning meals for dogs and sticking to the schedule. Who would want keep their pet waiting?
